Your private vault. With a scanner built in.

Keep IDs, papers, photos, notes and cards in one place on your iPhone, and lock it with Face ID.

Scan anything in a tap: Paperwise cleans up and reads every page on your iPhone. Everything Paperwise stores is encrypted with its own key, and anything it keeps in the cloud for you is locked first, so we can’t open it.

How it works

1

Add anything

Tap Scan for a page: clean-up that rescues low light, shadows and folds, on your iPhone. Or tap + for a photo, a file, a note or a card.

2

It lands on a shelf

ID cards, cards, notes, photos and files sort themselves; text is read on your iPhone so search finds it. With Pro’s AI helper, scans are named and sorted too.

3

Keep it, share it, hide it

Search every page, send a link that expires, or move it into Hidden, encrypted by Paperwise.

Everything your papers need.

All features

Pro Ask and Extract, only when you allow it

Ask your paper anything.

Answers come only from your pages, with the page they came from. The app asks before a document’s text goes to our AI provider.

Privacy

Built so we can’t read your documents.

Most apps ask you to trust them with everything. Paperwise is designed so you have to trust us with as little as possible, and tells you exactly where that is.

  1. Your iPhone

    Keys live here.
    Pages are read here.

  2. Our cloud

    Only locked boxes.
    We can’t open them.

  3. Your iPad

    Keys live here.
    Unlocked here.

Your keys stay on your devices. For sync, backup and share links, the cloud only carries boxes it can’t open.

AI and Office conversions you start are the exception: the app asks first. Forwarded email is sealed the moment it arrives.

What we can see, and what we can’t

Full list, with how long we keep each thing: Security whitepaper §9.
We can seeWe can’t see
That you have an account (we don’t ask Apple for your name or email)Your documents, photos or notes in sync, backup or links
Your devices: their names (your iPhone’s model by default), platform, push token, and last seen (about once a day)Titles, text, folder names, file names
How many locked items you sync (hidden ones too), their sizes and datesWhat’s in Hidden, or which items are hidden
That an email arrived for your address and its size; your approved-senders list, if you set oneWho sent it, the subject, the attachments (sealed on arrival)
A share link’s size, expiry and how often it was openedWhat you shared, or the link’s key
Your plan, and how many AI actions you used (kept 35 days)Your scans, unless you send them to AI or for conversion
While an AI action or conversion you started runs: that document’s text or pages (not stored by us; our AI provider, OpenAI, may keep AI requests up to 30 days for abuse checks)—
  • Processed on your iPhone

Clean-up, text reading, search and the PDF tools run on the device, not on our servers.

  • AI only when you allow it

Nothing goes to AI until you allow it. Before AI first reads a document, we tell you it isn’t fully private.

  • Keys only you hold

Sync, backup and share links are locked on your iPhone before they leave it, with keys we don’t have.

  • Hidden behind your face

Face ID opens it. Add your own code or pattern, and Face ID or your phone’s passcode alone won’t do.

  • Spaces the app never countsPro

Up to 10 separate Hidden spaces, each opened by its own passcode. The app never lists them.

  • An emergency passcodePro

One per space. If you’re ever forced to open Hidden, type it instead: it opens that space and erases the others on this iPhone.

  • Email, sealed on arrivalPro

Forwarded bills are locked the moment they reach Paperwise. After that, only your devices can open them.

  • Links that forgetPro

Share links expire within 7 days, can need a password, and their key never reaches our server.

The one thing we can’t do: recover your data for you. If you lose every device and your recovery key, it’s gone. That’s what end-to-end means, and why we give you a recovery key and a free encrypted backup.

Everything Paperwise stores is encrypted with its own key. Pages, files, photos, thumbnails and the database of titles, text, notes and tags are encrypted on your iPhone with a key kept in its Keychain for this device only. Readable copies exist only while you scan, view, edit or share. Hidden adds keys only Face ID, your Hidden passcode or your recovery key open.

The vault’s key isn’t behind Face ID, so sync and backup work with the app lock off. Something running as Paperwise on your unlocked iPhone could read the vault: turn the app lock on, and keep your most private papers in Hidden.

How Paperwise keeps your documents private

Hidden

Some things aren’t for everyone.

A private space inside your vault, encrypted by Paperwise. It always needs Face ID, and you can add your own code or a 4×4 pattern.

  • Private photos and videos

Shoot straight into Hidden, even from the Lock Screen: those never touch Photos or iCloud Photos. Or move photos out of your camera roll (they were in Photos first, until you delete the originals).

  • IDs, medical papers and secure notes

Encrypted by Paperwise, never in the vault’s search, never sent to AI. Screenshots are blocked while Hidden is open (best effort).

  • Separate spaces and an emergency passcodePro

Up to 10 spaces, each with its own passcode and its own emergency passcode, which opens that space and erases the others on this iPhone.

  • A disguised iconPro

Swap the Paperwise icon for a Calculator, Notes, Weather or Utilities look.

How Hidden works

Pro Share safely

Send a document, not a copy forever.

Opens in any browser, no app needed. Choose when it expires, add a password or an open limit, and turn it off anytime from Shared links.

Turning links off needs a free Paperwise account; links made while signed out simply expire. Anyone with the whole link can open it until then, and can save a copy.

Pro Forward by email

Forward your bills. They file themselves.

Email isn’t end-to-end encrypted, so the sender and their email provider see it. From the moment it reaches Paperwise, it’s sealed to your devices’ key, and only they can open it.

Everywhere you are.

Free encrypted iCloud backup

Locked on your iPhone with a key your recovery key protects, and stored in your iCloud. Apple can’t open your documents.

Your documents are left out of iPhone device backups, so turn this on to keep a copy.

Sync across iPhone and iPad Pro

End-to-end encrypted. Add a device by scanning a code.

Questions

Do you see my documents?

Not what we keep for you. Sync, the iCloud backup and share links are locked on your iPhone before they leave it, and forwarded email is sealed the moment it reaches us, so we can’t open them.

We do see a document’s text or pages while an AI action or a Word, Excel or PowerPoint conversion you started is running, and we see metadata such as sizes, counts, dates and device names. The full list is in what we can and can’t see.

What does AI see, and when?

Only documents you send. Nothing goes to AI until you allow it: before AI first reads a document, the app tells you it isn’t fully private. With Pro’s “Name and sort new scans” on, you’re told once for everything you add afterwards.

Most actions send the document’s text; Read with AI, Extract, Count and “Keep the layout” send page images. Our AI provider, OpenAI, gets each request with storage turned off and no user or install identifier, and doesn’t train on it, but may keep requests up to 30 days for abuse checks. We have no zero-data-retention agreement yet. Hidden items and documents marked “Never send to AI” are never sent.

Is my whole vault encrypted?

Yes. Everything Paperwise stores on your iPhone (pages, files, photos, thumbnails and the database of titles, text, notes and tags) is encrypted with its own key, kept in this iPhone’s Keychain for this device only. Readable copies exist only while you scan, view, edit or share. Hidden adds keys only Face ID, your Hidden passcode or your recovery key open.

The vault’s key isn’t behind Face ID, so sync and backup work with the app lock off. That also means something running as Paperwise on your unlocked iPhone could read the vault: turn the app lock on and keep your most private papers in Hidden. Anything that leaves the phone for backup, sync or a share link is encrypted on the iPhone first.

What if I lose my phone?

Restore from Paperwise’s encrypted iCloud backup, or from sync on another device, with your recovery key. Without backup or sync your documents are only on that phone: the vault’s key never leaves it, so neither an iPhone device backup nor a phone-to-phone transfer can open the vault. Restored files are encrypted again under the new iPhone’s own key.

If you lose every device and your recovery key, nobody can recover your data, including us. That’s the price of end-to-end encryption, and why we give you a recovery key and a free encrypted backup.

What’s an emergency passcode?

A Pro option for Hidden, one per space. Typed instead of that space’s passcode, it opens that space and quietly erases the other spaces on that iPhone. Copies in sync or the iCloud backup stay locked, and come back with their recovery keys.

It reduces, but can’t remove, the risk of someone forcing you to unlock. See the emergency passcode.

Can Apple read my backup?

Not Paperwise’s encrypted iCloud backup: it’s locked on your iPhone first, with a key protected by your recovery key. Apple sees how many records there are, their sizes and dates.

Your documents’ files aren’t in iPhone device backups. The app’s encrypted database is, but its key never leaves that iPhone, so that copy can’t be opened on another phone.

Is it really free?

Yes. Scanning, on-device clean-up and search, PDF export, signing, folders, notes, files, cards, Hidden (one space, with Face ID and an optional code or pattern), the private camera and the encrypted iCloud backup are free, with no watermark, ads or tracking.

AI, searchable and password PDFs, sync, Forward by email, share links and the extra privacy tools are Pro.

iPad? Android?

Paperwise runs on iPhone and iPad, with a sidebar, keyboard shortcuts, drag and drop and Apple Pencil on iPad. There’s no Android version; it’s planned for later.

Does Pro work on my other devices?

Pro comes with your Apple ID’s subscription. On each iPhone or iPad, open Account → Plan & account → Restore purchases to turn Pro on there. Only sync and Forward by email follow your Paperwise account to every signed-in device.
